Bandi Chhorh Divas & Diwali Celebrations (Golden Temple) Amritsar Punjab. Diwali at Golden Temple

Bandi Chhorh Divas & Diwali Celebrations  (Golden Temple) Amritsar Punjab.
Diwali at Golden Temple

The Golden Temple, the holiest Sikh shrine, will see fewer fireworks this Diwali -- out of concern for the environment.

Environment activists and the Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) had urged the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) to find alternatives to the traditional fireworks display.

In a letter to the SGPC president, PPCB chairman Kahan Singh Pannu sought help in controlling pollution in and around the shrine around Diwali.

Pannu, who earlier as Amritsar's deputy commissioner laid great emphasis on cleanliness, pointed out that pollution from the fireworks could damage heritage buildings of the shrine complex.

"It is the duty of (PPCB) to point out the pollution levels. We have asked SGPC to find some alternative way of celebrations," Pannu said.

However, the SGPC plans to go ahead with the fireworks display this Diwali also, albeit with some caution.

"We will only display fireworks which go high up in the air. We are concerned about the pollution at the ground level," a SGPC official told IANS here.

Ra-one Review

Cast: Shahrukh KhanKareena KapoorArjun RampalArmaan VermaShahana Goswami, Tom Wu
Directed by Anubhav Sinha
Rating: Not even One
STAR: ***

Movie Review: Rajnikant's Robot may have pre-dated it, but Ra-One does manage to hold despite the larger-than-life quality of Rajni's antics as Chitti. Here, Shah Rukh Khan does the train walk sideways and he does it rather well. And if that is not enough, the two desi sci fi heroes have a split second encounter on the streets of Mumbai, with Rajni saar showing off his flying googles act and SRK replicating it with elan. Twin Rascals!

Ra-One works on several accounts. First because it has some interesting clashes betwen G-One, the good robot(Shah Rukh Khan) and Ra-One, the bad robot, who can take the form of anyone he wants. Secondly, the bond that G-One develops with the family he is supposed to protect, Kareena and her young son Prateik, is warm and winsome. There is also a lot of wit thrown in here and there in the screenplay, specially when the film concentrates on the geeky and loving Subramaniam's family dinners. And finally it is the excellently sung and choreographed Chammak-Challo number which keeps the mercury rising to unprecendented heights.

It is only much later, almost closer to the intermission that we see Shah Rukh Khan's 'action avatar'. Here, in one particular shot Khan as G.One is perched atop a broken car against a London skyline. His intense look and poise sparks a glimmer of hope in a movie that promises to be a dreadful watch.

Unfortunately, it lives up to this promise and everything from there is a downhill ride despite all the special effects and some rather cool action scenes.

Which brings me to the SFX. There is no doubt that the effects we see in Ra.One are the best in Bollywood yet, but to say that they're comparable to the Western standards would probably be an overstatement.

My Opinion:
Good thing about the movie were VFX and Kareena and the kid. Music was good. Software engineers please leave your brain at home while you watch the movie. SRK spend so much money on PR, had he spend 1% on story it would have been a good movie.

Diwali 20110special: Funky lighting ideas!

Diwali 20110 special: Funky lighting ideas!

DIYA MAGIC
"We have special colourful earthen lamps called pantis that we use to decorate our homes during Diwali," says Gaurita Wagh, a Maharashtrian. "Traditionally, these pantis were filled with ghee and then lit," she explains.
But today you can take these little diyas and place lit wax tea lights in each of them. Try arranging them at strategic points around your rangoli.
If you are looking for something that you can use year after year, pick up a large metal diya, fill it with water and set afloat a couple of tea lights. It will make a great centrepiece. You can buy these from stores like Good Earth or Lifestyle.
"Having 14 diyas is auspicious because Lord Rama returned home after 14 years of exile from the forests," Himika Ganguly, a Bengali explains.
Quick tip: Choose tiny earthen pots that can fit just a single tea light and use them to decorate your balcony ledge. They are available in a variety of colours, decorated with mirror, tinsel and the works.

FASCINATING LANTERNS
"Kandeels (paper lanterns) are an exciting part of our Diwali decorations," says Gaurita. They are hung outside the door and are generally made of red and yellow crepe or sandwich paper. It is said the lantern is guiding light for Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth.
So go ahead, welcome prosperity into your home and drive away evil with colourful lanterns. Local markets are the best place to get crepe, sandwich and handmade paper lamps.
River lights are a new trend in lanterns. They are standing lanterns made from coloured glass and brass that can be used to decorate any surface, be it a coffee table or a verandah. A row of river lights can be quite charming focus point.

Quick tip: You could even try Arabian brass lanterns with decorative holes in it. Try either wax candles or tiny light bulbs inside them and watch the soft coloured glow spread around your home!
SCENTED CANDLES
The soft glow of candles is enough to make you feel warm inside. But imagine the added aroma of vanilla or lavender filling the air. Heavenly, isn't it?
You can try pillar candles, candles carved in unique shapes or ones with printed motifs on them too. You could use ornate candle stands or holders to display them.
Depending on your budget, you can pick candles from high-end stores like The Faraway Tree or more economical ones like Lifestyle or Home Stop.
STARRY ATTRACTIONS
Rice lights, though not a very traditional idea, are a great way to decorate window grills. You could even drape them like a valance at the top of your doorway if you are not using garlands. Rice lights are available at any store that has party decorations.
If you have tall potted plants in your balcony or even at the entrance to your home, try wrapping a small string of lights around them. It will add that festive glam to your surroundings.

Diwali 2011

Diwali is one of the biggest festival of Hindus, celebrated with great enthusiasm and happiness in India. The festival is celebrated for five continuous days, where the third days is celebrated as the main Diwali festival or 'Festival of lights'. Different colorful varieties of fireworks are always associated with this festival. On this auspicious day, people light up diyas and candles all around their house. They perform Laxmi Puja in the evening and seek divine blessings of Goddess of Wealth. The festival od Diwali is never complete without exchange of gifts. People present diwali gifts to all near and dear ones.

Historically, the origin of Diwali can be traced back to ancient India, when it was probably an important harvest festival. However, there are various legends pointing to the origin of Diwali or 'Deepawali.' Some believe it to be the celebration of the marriage of Lakshmi with Lord Vishnu. Whereas in Bengal the festival is dedicated to the worship of Mother Kali, the dark goddess of strength. Lord Ganesha, the elephant-headed God, the symbol of auspiciousness and wisdom, is also worshiped in most Hindu homes on this day. In Jainism, Deepawali has an added significance to the great event of Lord Mahavira attaining the eternal bliss of nirvana. Diwali also commemorates the return of Lord Rama along with Sita and Lakshman from his fourteen year long exile and vanquishing the demon-king Ravana. In joyous celebration of the return of their king, the people of Ayodhya, the Capital of Rama, illuminated the kingdom with earthen diyas (oil lamps) and burst crackers.

The Significance of Lights & Firecrackers

All the simple rituals of Diwali have a significance and a story to tell. The illumination of homes with lights and the skies with firecrackers is an expression of obeisance to the heavens for the attainment of health, wealth, knowledge, peace and prosperity. According to one belief, the sound of fire-crackers are an indication of the joy of the people living on earth, making the gods aware of their plentiful state. Still another possible reason has a more scientific basis: the fumes produced by the crackers kill a lot of insects and mosquitoes, found in plenty after the rains.
